Sendai's first

A few weeks ago, the first Sendai release "Sustaining the Chain" saw the light of day.

The original version of Sustaining The Chain provides a glimpse into the duo’s shared interest in pure, energetic techno. After a three minute build-up the track arrives at the core of its being: a growling, deep bassline, ever expanding and evolving, sustained by swirling effects and sparse percussion. This is techno stripped down to its essential elements, while deploying the full impact needed to move a crowd during peak time.

On remix duty, Peter Van Hoesen carefully selects specific percussive elements of the original and warps them into a hypnotic, deep and friendly groove. There is a definite cinematic approach applied to this remix – think widescreen future dub and you’re close. A track for the 8 am crowd."

What's going on?

It's been a while, but here's a little update on what's going on.

Some time ago i finished my part of the soundtrack for "Linkeroever" by Pieter Van Hees, soon in a movie theater near you.

Other music for that movie was done by Simon Lenski, and in the meantime he and i started talking about getting some more work done together.

Right now i'm working on the score for a dance solo by Antoine Effroy and Anne Rudelbach, performed by Catherine Jodoin, premiering at the end of the month at Kampnagel - Hamburg.

I'm thinking about and hoping to release that score, but i still didn't figure out where and how.

I'm also making a bit of music for a new dance solo by Claudio Bernardo, soon to be premiered too.

And it seems i found the right energy again to spend (even) more time in the studio, working on some new solo stuff and i recently enjoyed being in the studio again with Peter Van Hoesen.

Soon i'll start working on a new piece by Inne Goris/Zeven. Still not really clear about what exactly i'm going to do...

The Time Code Matter 2 performance with Audiostore turned out to be successful too. A good crowd, a nice venue with nice people and a superb programming.

In between all this i've been enjoying the latest Autechre and "Film", Stefan Németh's solo-album.

On Saturday 24, Eavesdropper & Simon Lenski (DAAU, Lenski & Wiget,...) team up again for 2 (two!) live sets at Ancienne Belgique - Brussels.

We're invited to be part of the Carte Blanche weekend hosted by Wim Vandekeybus (for those who have been sleeping for the last 20 years, Vandekeybus is one of Belgium's most renowned choreographers, traveling the world with his performances and films...).

Other artists that night are Woven Hand, Marc Ribot and Flat Earth Society.

On Sunday, you can check out Pawlowski, Daan and much more.

Eavesdropper and Polyfoon

Last weekend, i was invited to play along Polyfoon, a polyphonic ensemble. The night was called Death, and the repertoire consisted of 16-th century requiems and other works. It was a challenging and interesting experience, not only because of the talent of the 30-piece choir but also because of the acoustics of the beautiful Carolus Borromeus church in Antwerp.

Music for kids in Droesem

Our favorite record store in Brussels, Le Bonheur, is dealing with some serious financial trouble.
To boost the financial status of the shop, our man Thierry asked some people to play in-store gigs, and of course i couldn't say no. So next week Saturday (July 28) i'll team up again with the Visual Kitchen boys for a moment of improvisation with electronics and most likely a guitar! The gig starts at 8 pm.
Part two of the good news is that on the other side of the street Bar Walvis re-opened, so drinks after!

I'd really appreciate it to see some friendly familiar faces there. Thank you!

Time Code Matter, the first release on our surround audio label Stem has been selected for the Sonar festival in Barcelona. For the first time in the festival's history, they will host a selection of 5.1 surround audio works, and we're very happy to be part of that program.

Sat.Land selected for Courtisane festival

Sat.land, a movie by Martin Heckmann and music by Eavesdropper got selected for the Courtisane festival in Ghent, Belgium.
The film combines high resolution satellite images from different parts of the world into one simulated topography. It shows a smooth, animated flight over sublime landscapes, deserted conflict areas (Afghanistan, Iraq) and topical cities (Falludja, Cairo, Los Angeles).

Eavesdropper gig review

On Friday, Eavesdropper played live again after a long period of inactivity on stage. Besides the noisy crowd and a not really state of the art sound system, it was very helpful to try out new stuff and working methods. The real afficionados apparently liked the music, and it was a good kick in the butt to keep working on live sets. Soon there's another gig (see earlier posts) in different circumstances, so feel free to check it out.

Altitude 1000 reunites the Brussels audiovisual scene by combining and
opening up the Foton and Cimatics Platform networks. Open to every kind of
Brussels-linked artist who combines audio and visuals in intriguing ways,
the Altitude1000 DVD compilation and festival at Recyclart present the
first fruits of this collaboration.

The Altitude 1000 festival is the first in a series of events that brings
together the Brussels audiovisual scene. Altitude1000 aims to reunite
locally and promote internationally, those artist that have given proof of
the unique atmosphere and creative environment in Brussels.

The DVD will be officially presented during the festival, which takes

Music score for Kumari

Last week, i finished the score for Kumari, a theatre play for kids, produced by HetPaleis - Antwerp, written and directed by Dimitri Leue and Pieter Embrechts. We did a few try-outs, but the real première is somewhere January 2007. If you and you're kids are into oriental magic, sweet acting and beautiful stage design, it's a must-see. Next weekend, Steve Heather, Alex Waterman and Eavesdropper jumpstart a new album at the studio. Offical promo for Klimat

Yves De Mey/Eavesdropper and Christoph De Boeck/Audiostore present their second collaboration, a further elaboration of Time Code Matter, a spatialized music performance that premiered at the “Concertgebouw” in Bruges in 2005. In Klimat, as well as in their own individual work, they explore the organic qualities of minuscule audio structures. The sonic texture connects with electronic forms of nature. The sound of Time Code Matter was established by and through the reflection of sound in the vast empty hall of the “Concertgebouw”, with the audience seated on stage.

This time, Audiostore and Eavesdropper wish to surround the audience in a more direct and confrontational fashion. People will stay within a circle of 8 loudspeakers where each individual can choose his point of view and of listening. Klimat builds a space where the musicians shape conditions and define atmosphere.

Next year , Eavesdropper and Audiostore will create an audio-performance with metal surfaces, vibrating and resonating along with the composition. The circular set-up for Klimat is a study for this bigger production.

Mastering TUK

New STEM-label performance

Audiostore and Eavesdropper are currently working on the next instalment of their surround audio performance-cycle.
After Time Code Matter (concerts + DVD), it's now time for KLIMAT, a concert for an eight speaker set-up.
We're currently working on the sounds and the software patch, almost reaching its final phase.
The first performance of Klimat is hosted by Happy New Ears, a festival for new music in Kortrijk - Belgium on Saturday September 23. More info soon here.

Totally improvised (i get to see the footage only a few hours before the show) and from scratch.
Afterwards, there's an eclectic DJ-set at Petrol (also in Antwerp).

Knobsounds - Stem blog available

Finally jumping on this train too. Hopefully we'll be able to update the blog very frequently. We'll mainly use it as a means of sharing concert info, release info, maybe some thoughts about issues we strongly relate to, and from time to time some recommendations for a better musical life.
